The Livestock Room at the back of Fortune Sound Club was always used as a concept space to try new things within a club environment. A space that contained a scene within a scene, a vibe within a vibe, a party within a party. With two different redesigns for the Livestock Room under our belt, we’ve enlisted longtime Fortune family members Ian Sandilands and Brittany Mackenzie to take on the third reincarnation of the legendary space.
The new design of the Livestock Room is inspired by the community that has formed over the last five years at Fortune. Everyone from our customers to performers and staff have all helped to shape Fortune into what it is today. Because the Fortune community is way too big to fit on any wall, we’ve settled on a smaller group of people to act as a snapshot and a symbol of the larger group.

Tell us a little bit about your inspiration behind you redesign of the Livestock Room
Brittany: I was inspired by some of the glow-in-the-dark work I saw in one of Ian’s Keith Haring books. I was toying with the idea of doing something like that, a glow in the dark show or something. I think I mentioned it to Garret one day and somehow, the idea evolved into a mural for the Livestock Room.
Walk us through the process leading up to creating this installation
Ian: It was a really natural progression; the concept was basically born out of a lot of back forth between Brittany and I. We were lucky that Garret Louie (one of the owners of Fortune) was so accessible and was always available to have us bounce ideas off of him. We were able to get a good start early on and fine tune the concept over the last couple of months.
What tools and materials did you use?
I: We spent a lot of time working with Allan at Blast Media Inc. deciding on what materials would be best for the project. Once we got samples of the neon vinyl and saw how it popped under black light, we went with that. I’m glad I got a chance to do such a large installation with this material.
What was the most difficult part of the installation?
B: The neon vinyl is much more expensive than regular vinyl, so figuring out how to get it done within our budget was tricky. We’re so thankful to Allan at Blast Media for working so hard to make it happen for us.
What are you guys working on next?
B: I have an art show coming up on August 27th with my friend Meghann Mcgrath at The Something Club, 1505 Powell. It will be the last show in the space because after that the landlord is taking the building back. I’m also just about to get started on a series with a brilliant photographer and friend of mine, Paul Harman. It’s inspired by a song called “Miss World” by Hole.
I: I’m preparing to begin my Masters in Architecture this September.
